Midsummers Eve... Concrete jungle Style
24. jun 2009 12:29, MikkelMidsummers Eve is all about sitting in the grass around a huge bonfire, slowly going from being roasted at the start of the fire to shivering with cold when only the embers are left and night has fallen. Perhaps singing a few songs, drinking a beer and generally having a good time despite either being too hot or miserably cold... at least thats how it is where I come from.
In Copenhagen it's different as I learned last night. Here it's all about cramming as many billions of people as possible on to a dead concrete and tarmac area and then try to find a spot thats close enough for you to even see the bonfire and still remote enough not to be smothered by the smoke.
Nah, it was all good ;)

Ain't it cute....
The spot we decided to go to was right on the waterfront and we had a glorious view of the sun setting across the harbour and tonnes of happy people milling around showing off their finest clothes, beer or wine in hand, trying not to get to much ash on themselves.
I was ready to leave as soon as we arrived, too many people, too little grass, too much noise and too little Midsummers Eve as I know them. Marianne took a firm grip on my hand though and commanded me to give it a chance... so I did. We ended up spending a few hours and after a while we even manouvered ourselves quite cleverly through the throng and grabbed a spot right by the fire. Perfect for Marianne to down a few beers and this boring old man to down some sodas. I don't mix drink and crunch periods ;)

Fire, water & happy people
Not much more to say about that one... ended up a very nice evening.
